January|| Release RoundUp Awards

As we wind down the crazy 1st month of 2018, there has already been so many amazing new releases. And we are only in January!  The literary market booms with a surge of romance novels during the month of January and we definitely saw a lot of that. But there were also some interesting and important releases crawling through the cracks.

In the Release RoundUp Awards, we only have three categories: Most Buzzed About, Sleeper Hit, and the Thriced Most Anticipated.

Let’s see January’s winners!

Most Buzzed About: Tie! : The Wife Between US and Meet Cutemeetcute.jpg

The Wife Between us– I’ve seen this spooky blue tinted cover everywhere. In every book store, in every window, on everyone’s feed, on the NYT bestseller list. A debut co-written novel from former book editor Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, bestselling novelist with over 80 books has already been sold in over 30 countries and already has been optioned for a Spielberg film.  Heralded as The next Gone Girl (how many times have we heard that?), The Wife Between us about the complexities of marriage, love, gender, youth all packaged in a twisty domestic noir. My hand may be forced to add this one to my TBR and read it before I miss out on this cultural phenomena in the making.

Meet Cute– the collection of anthologies about cute romantic first encounters, a lullaby of When Harry Met Sally (or sally met sally or harry met harry) from some of the most celebrated YA authors including Jennifer L. Armentrout, Sona Charaipotra, Dhonielle Clayton, Katie Cotugno, Jocelyn Davies, Nina LaCour, Emery Lord, Katharine McGee , Kass Morgan, Meredith Russo, Sara Shepard, Nicola Yoon, Ibi Zoboi, and Julie Murphy. Phew I think we named everyone. With huge heavy hitters and promising newcomers, there’s any wonder that I’ve seen this one just about everywhere. Despite the hype-train, I’m a sucker for love so one is definitely going on my TBR and possibly even Reading List hmm?

Sleeper Hit: The Immoralists

Written by Chloe Benjamin, The Immoralists sounds like a Black Mirror episode waiting to happen maybe throw a little bit of Greek tragedy in there (Antigone fans anyone?). In 1969 nestled on the Lower East Side of NYC, four siblings seek out a psychic who boasts a simple claim: she will be able to tell the date of your death. Following the lives of these siblings through their different lives and whereabouts, Benjamin explores an timeless human conundrum: how would live the rest of your life if you knew when you would die? With an interesting concept like this and the beautiful striking Immoralists’ cover, there is no wonder Immoralists is quietly becoming the sleeper-hit on January.

Thriced most Anticipated: This will be my undoing: Living at the Intersection of Black, Female, and Feminist in (White) America

 If you’ve already read Monday’s Book Announcement, you’ll know that Morgan Jerkins, cultural critic and intersectional feminist, is our first book of the February. The massively awaited collection of essays surrounds commentary on feminism, pop culture, racism, misogyny and above all the intersectional challenging experience of being a black woman today. Needlessly to say from a personal standpoint, I preordered my copy before 2018 began. My hope is that this collection will give a much-needed pivotal into the issues black women face gliding through the world and white feminist spaces with two disenfranchised titles. From the looks of it, Amazon told advised that we should be receiving our book today. We are waiting by the door with bated breath.

So there you have it. The Release RoundUp for January: What was your favorite January release? Are you gonna drink the coo laid and read the Wife Between Us? Did Meet Cute make you aww? Did the immoralists confuse you or break your heart? Let us know in the comments!
